Red Light Therapy: The #1 Reason Why It's Therapeutic
An exploration of photobiomodulation & its core benefit
As you likely already now, I am a red light therapy respecter.
I have covered it extensively through my social media content for good reason.
But what’s the allure?
What is the #1 reason why it’s therapeutic?
The answer resides in how it influences the mitochondria of your cells.
Both red and near infrared light wavelengths carry a potent impact on the “engine” of each cell in your body. But here’s the thing, mitochondria play an elaborate role in human health, far beyond producing ATP which your body uses for energy.
Only about 3% of the genes needed to make a mitochondrion go into its energy production equipment. The vast majority are involved in other jobs that are specific to the cell type where they are found.
Here’s a list to give you an idea:
Mitochondria help decide which cells are destroyed during cell death, also called apoptosis. This process is an essential part of life. Mitochondria release cytochrome C, which activates caspase, one of the chief enzymes involved in destroying cells during this process.
Mitochondria play a critical role in storing calcium by quickly absorbing calcium ions and holding them until they are needed. This is especially important for heart disease since calcification is the root cause.
Mitochondria can produce heat through a process called proton leak. This is known as non-shivering thermogenesis and relies on brown fat as the energy source.
Mitochondria have several critical roles in metabolism, even in organisms that live anaerobically and do not use their mitochondria for ATP synthesis.
Mitochondria are central in nitrogen metabolism, metabolizing the glutamate used in transamination reactions and the glutamine used to shuttle nitrogen around the body, as well as the site of half of the reactions of the urea cycle.
Mitochondria found in specific cell types are largely responsible for melatonin production and regulation.
The point is mitochondria are unfathomably important to human health and that’s where red light therapy is a cost effective means to improve their function, and in turn, your overall well-being.
If you’ve ever done a deep dive into the benefits of photobiomodulation, you’ll be shocked to find there’s hardly anything it doesn’t improve.
Why is that?
Largely because it improves mitochondria function and nitric oxide production.
Everything from sleep to wound healing to energy levels improve rapidly which makes it a no brainer one time purchase.
The Future of Red Light Therapy
I’ll likely be proven incorrect, but I believe every household will have a red light therapy device within a decade.
How could we as a nation ignore the potential of this technology which has been around for about 100 years, especially considering it’s relatively cheap price?
But of course, people don’t operate solely on logic.
The public sphere and narrative still has a lot to learn. Most people don’t even know about red light therapy. We’re starting to see bigger companies take interest in this technology for a number of reasons, but it’s still a game of catch up.
I’m excited about this subject which is why I continue to learn about it.
Most importantly, I’ve experienced its therapeutic benefits.
Let me know how it works for you after some experience with it.
I love to hear others’ experiences with red light therapy.
