Epidemiology is defined as the branch of science that studies how diseases affect populations, and the factors that influence health and disease. It includes the methods and tools to analyze health trends in groups, often at large scale. It can use multiple study designs, including observational studies (most common) and experimental studies (like randomized controlled trials, though less common).

Observational studies (as used in epidemiology) are non-interventional studies used within epidemiology to track real world health patterns. It’s one method of conducting epidemiological research.

It refers to a type of study design where researchers do not intervene or manipulate variables. They simply observe natural variations (like watching what people eat and tracking health outcomes). Cohort studies, case control studies, cross sectional studies are all included here.
